Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, “Young, Gifted & Black” emerges as a transformative initiative led by inspiring Afro Brazilian female artists and producers: Emmanuele Uereaua, Clau Mayã, and Fernanda Campos. Together, they’ve collaborated with Just Us Dance Theatre, supported by Joseph Toonga’s independent work, “Born to Exist” to create an impactful movement.
The Urgent Need:
In Brazil, Rio de Janeiro specifically, the challenges faced by underprivileged teenagers are profound. Against a backdrop of socioeconomic disparities, cultural disconnection, and systemic barriers, the need for empowerment and cultural revitalization is critical. promises an immersive, multifaceted experience. From theoretical insights to practical dance forms, this initiative seeks to empower, educate, and elevate the cultural consciousness of participants.
Empowerment Through Art:
At its core, “Young, Gifted & Black” harnesses the power of artistic expression. It culminates in a mesmerizing Hip Hop Theatre Performance, a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture, infused with elements developed during the creative process.
Through dance, spoken word, and creative amalgamations, the project strives to amplify voices and reimagine societal narratives.
Impact and Vision:
Led by these inspiring Afro-Brazilian female artists and producers, in collaboration with Just Us Dance Theatre and Joseph Toonga’s invaluable support, “Young, Gifted & Black” aims to transcend boundaries. The vision is to empower marginalized
voices, rewrite narratives, and inspire societal change, echoing the sentiments of Angela Davis about the influential role of the black woman in shaping society.
